Briefing Paper: Future of water resources


Today the FWR have published a briefing paper on the future of water resources provides an overview of the key challenges facing the water sector and explores potential solutions to support the UK in moving towards a sustainable water sector that works for people and nature.

This briefing paper was informed through a facilitated roundtable discussion organised by the FWR Water Resources and Quality Technical Panel, and chaired by Technical Panel member Ian Davis. Attendees at the roundtable were:

  • Lindsay Hargreaves, representing the agricultural and land management sector
  • Paul Hickey, Ofwat
  • Virginie Keller, UKCEH
  • Alister Leggatt, Affinity Water
  • Andy Turner, Environment Agency
  • Varsha Wylie, Southern Water


It is estimated that by 2050 England will face a gap between supply and demand of approximately 4 billion litres of water per day. Ensuring sustainable management and use of water resources is essential to securing a resilient water sector that can deliver for people and planet.

This discussion aimed to bring together expert views on the future of water resources, and focus on potential solutions to the challenges the water sector faces.
