SUMMARY:Climate adaptation in focus: Future-proofing our waters and coasts
DESCRIPTION:How can we build climate resilience in the face of profound change to our waters and coasts? \nJoin us for a webinar and panel discussion bringing together members across the Foundation for Water Research (FWR) and Marine & Coastal Science Community to explore the risks posed by climate change for our waters and coasts and how we can manage them. You will have the opportunity to hear from expert speakers on related topics\, including flood and drought resilience\, the impact of wetter winters on agricultural pollution\, and coastal change. \nPresentations include (more tba!): \n\nWetter winters: the size of the adaptation challenge for the resilience of soil loss regulation on farmland – The increased frequency of wet weather extremes under a changing climate\, is driving a growing focus on understanding the resilience of agroecosystems and the critical goods and services they deliver. In this talk\, Prof Adie Collins will introduce the risks climate change poses for increased water pollution from agriculture and new research quantifying the magnitude of the management challenge. Against this context\, the world’s most instrumented and monitored farm (the North Wyke Farm Platform – a UK National Bioscience Research Infrastructure) has been used to explore the resilience of winter soil loss regulation delivered by lowland grazing livestock and arable farm systems under conventional best management.\n\nThis event is part of a series of online events on climate adaptation being held to coincide with the UNFCCC’s COP31\, taking place in Türkiye. Adapting to climate change is a social imperative and must be done in tandem with effective climate mitigation measures to increase resilience across all aspects of our environmental\, social\, and economic systems. These events aim to bring together environmental professionals to discuss the importance of climate adaptation and consider how it relates to their areas of work and professional practice. The events have been supported by the Climate Action Community. \nOur speakers\nProfessor Adie Smith is Science Director at Rothamsted Research with overall responsibility for the IFP. His research interests broadly encompass the sustainability and resilience of agriculture. They specifically include a number of themes: 1) characterising pollutant emissions to water; 2) the development and application of pollutant source tracing procedures; 3) understanding cross-sector water pollution at different scales and the development of screening tools for contextualising the role of agriculture in water quality problems; 4) the impacts of agricultural pollution on aquatic ecology; 5) measuring and modelling the efficacy of on-farm interventions for managing agricultural sustainability and resilience\, and; 6) scenario-based evaluation for policy support. He has >330 scientific publications. \nMore tba! \nAbout the FWR\nThe Foundation for Water Research (FWR) is an independent community of professionals from across the water sector and related scientific specialisms. The community comes together for deliberative discussion to support the development of interdisciplinary solutions to water challenges. \nThe FWR Community provides guidance and strategic thought leadership for the IES’s water activities\, and collaborates with the wider IES family on issues related to land\, air and policy implementation. \nAbout the Marine & Coastal Science Community\nThe IES has a dedicated Marine & Coastal Science Community with members from a wide range of backgrounds and sectors. Through UN Ocean Decade endorsement of its inaugural project\, Turning the Tide\, the Community has explored topics such as the land-sea interface; blue carbon; the blue economy; and conservation and restoration. \nAbout the Climate Action Community\nOur interdisciplinary Climate Action Community (CAC) champions transformative approaches to reshaping unsustainable systems. We recognise that climate change cannot be addressed in isolation but requires solutions that address the interlinked challenges of biodiversity loss and pollution. \nThe Community holds regular events\, discussions\, and biannual community meetings covering adaptation\, mitigation and resilience. It also engages with key organisations and initiatives across the sector\, including UNFCCC\, ISO and the Professional Bodies Climate Action Network. \nHeader image credit (c) whitcomberd via Adobe Stock

SUMMARY:Living with Floods: Public Engagement Opportunity for Engineers
DESCRIPTION:Living with Floods is a UK-wide engineering engagement programme funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The project is recruiting 30 engineers to support young people’s understanding of flooding\, climate resilience and the role of engineering in creating safer\, more resilient communities. \nFlooding is one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing communities across the UK. Many young people already hear about flooding through the news\, family conversations or local disruption\, but may not always have the opportunity to understand how flood risk is managed\, how engineering solutions work\, or how communities can prepare and adapt. \nLiving with Floods aims to address this through Flood Labs: half-day\, school-based workshops for students aged 11–16 in communities affected by coastal\, river and surface-water flooding. The programme will be delivered across London\, Leicestershire and Lancashire\, bringing together engineers\, educators and project partners to help students connect classroom learning with real-world environmental challenges. \nWe are now inviting practising and early-career engineers to register their interest in taking part. Engineers from civil\, environmental\, water\, drainage\, flood-risk\, infrastructure\, coastal engineering\, sustainable drainage and climate resilience backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. No previous school outreach experience is required\, as training will be provided. \nEngineers who join the programme will receive public engagement training before delivering at least one Flood Lab. The training will support participants to communicate technical ideas clearly\, work with young people\, and build confidence in discussing flood risk and resilience with non-specialist audiences. \nThe opportunity is designed to be practical and manageable. The engineer training will take place on 3 November 2026 in London. Flood Lab delivery is expected to take place between January and May 2027\, depending on school arrangements\, regional fit and engineer availability. \nTaking part will also support engineers’ own professional development. Participants will develop skills in public engagement\, communication\, storytelling\, inclusive facilitation and community-facing practice. The programme can also support CPD and chartership evidence by giving engineers structured experience in explaining technical knowledge\, engaging diverse audiences and contributing to community resilience education. \nLiving with Floods is particularly keen to involve both practising and early-career engineers from a wide range of backgrounds and career pathways. The programme aims to give students the chance to meet relatable engineering role models and see how different professional experiences can contribute to flood resilience\, climate adaptation and community safety. \nBy taking part\, engineers will help students understand how flooding affects communities\, how flood risk can be managed\, and how engineering contributes to practical\, creative and socially important solutions. \nTraining: Monday 25th January 2027\, London\nFlood Lab delivery: January–May 2027\, based on location and availability\nExpenses: Travel and reasonable expenses covered\nPlaces: 30 engineers \nEngineers interested in taking part can register here:\nLIVING WITH FLOODS (Expression of Interest) – Fill out form \nFor further information\, please contact:\nDr Mohammad Sakikhales\nProject Lead\, Living with Floods\nUniversity of West London\nMohammad.Saki@uwl.ac.uk \nMarziyeh Bahmani\nProject Coordinator\, Living with Floods\nUniversity of West London\nMarziyeh.bahmani@uwl.ac.uk
